Crochet for Charity

Crocheting for charity is one of the most rewarding things that many crocheters take part in. I am always inspired by those who choose to donate their crocheted creations to charity and therefore, I encourage others to do the same. By crocheting for charity, we can help many people in need of clothing, blankets, love and support. In addition, many if not most charities are a 501(c) (3), meaning that your donation is tax deductible. But better yet, you get the satisfaction that you are making the world a better place one crocheted item at a time.

Here is a list of charities to help you get started. Please visit the sites to learn more about each charity and I encourage you to get involved. If there is a charity that is not listed, which accepts crocheted donations, please share this charity with everyone by contacting us at [email protected]

So let’s get our hooks movin' for a good cause.

1000 Stitches

Description: 1000 Stitches is a project organized by Marny Elliott of Columbia, Missouri to encourage 1000 people to sew, knit or crochet a blanket for someone in need. Each individual crafter is encouraged to select a local individual or charity to support (e.g. homeless shelter, child with AIDS or cancer, a child living in a group home). Make a blanket for the charity or person or organization; wrap it as a gift with a note enclosed that provides a message of hope. Let Marny know (via e-mail, postcard, or letter) about your donation and the message you included; the type of blanket you gave; the recipient; how you felt about giving the gift; and include a photograph if possible. As a part of the 1000 Stitches project, Marny will make a booklet of all the items given away for everyone who participates. She will also help individuals find an organization in their area that needs donations.

Beth’s Hats for Hope
http://bethshatsforhopemassachusetts.blogspot.com/

Description:
The inspiration for this group stems from Emily’s Hats for Hope Initiative located in Morristown, New Jersey. Emily’s Hats for Hope Initiative is an organization that was founded by a 17 year old from New Jersey. Emily was a junior in high school when she began making winter hats for the local homeless and working poor in NJ. She began donating hats in January 2012 and since then she has donated thousands of hats, scarves, afghans, mittens, etc. Her hats have been donated to soup kitchens, battered women shelters and food pantries throughout the northeast and Kentucky and as far away as Guatemala. Her vision and her message have empowered many people throughout the US, Canada and as far away as Denmark and Australia to create their own versions of Emily’s Hats for Hope Initiative so that they too can give back to their community. This is how Emily wanted her project to evolve. She wanted her concept to be duplicated by people all over the world so that more people could benefit from a warm hat, mittens, gloves, scarf or afghan. Emily set out to show the world that teens can make a difference in the world.

The bows are made by volunteers using purchased and donated materials. We are in need of volunteers to crochet headbands that will fit babies to teenagers. We are also in need of crocheted bows and flowers and any other fun, cute, sweet designs that we could attach to a hair clip upon receipt. Warm Fuzzies of Love
www.freewebs.com/warmfuzziesoflove/

Description: My name is Amy Butterfield and I am co-founder of Warm Fuzzies of Love. After making numerous baby blankets for friends, I realized that I needed another outlet for my crocheting. I can only make so many blankets for my friends & family to enjoy! I had also just taught a friend and my 12 year-old daughter how to crochet, and they were looking for projects to work on. With a little discussion and thought, Warm Fuzzies of Love was born. We researched organizations that collect handmade items for people in need, and made the decision to align ourselves with five non-profit organizations that share our vision in helping others. The organizations were selected because their missions are dear to our hearts due to personal experiences we have faced, and the populations they serve. We provide blankets for Project Linus ? a national organization that collects and distributes handmade blankets to children in need. They may be knitted, crocheted, quilted or ?no-sew? type blankets. Within the local area, the blankets are given to hospitals, shelters, foster homes and more. We provide scarves for Threads of Compassion ? an organization that collects handmade scarves for victims of sexual violence. These are donated to area rape crisis centers and hospitals for distribution. We provide hats for chemotherapy patients for Head Huggers. Hats may be knitted, sewn or crocheted and are distributed to local cancer treatment centers, oncology offices and hospice organizations. We provide baby items, handmade and new, for Miracles Happen ? a national organization that supports pregnant women in need. Items made and donated are delivered to local pregnancy resource centers for distribution to their clients. We also provide handmade shawls and lap blankets to residents in nursing homes, hospice patients, parents of hospitalized children ? anyone who could benefit from the comfort.
